Castles, and Sweden, and Boats – Oh my!

Another week in the books and wow where do I begin? This week I checked lots off my Copenhagen bucket list so here are the top 4 things I did this week!

#1 Tivoli

Sunday I went to Tivoli Gardens – the second oldest amusement park in the world! Only a 15 minute bus ride from home, Tivoli was the perfect outing for what was another surprisingly warm day here in Copenhagen. I also happened to pick the best day ever to go – take your dog to Tivoli day. There were hundreds of fluffy puppers all of the place it was amazing. Walking into the park, I was taken a back by how cute and charming all the rides, shops, and restaurants were. The design of the park is more quirky and sweet then parks like Six-Flags back at home. But don’t be fooled – like me and my friends were – just because the rides look cute and old fashion does not mean they are tame. The Tik Tak ride was way more intense than I expected and had me screaming my head off while I flipped repeatldy upside down for a solid 3 minutes. My friends and I spent six hours at Tivoli taking in the beautiful gardens, lakes and flowers. Though it was probably my most expensive activity since I’ve been here, it was definitly worth it. If you do end up going – do not miss out on the swings! You get a remarkable view of Copenhagen from the top.

yes we did ride the carousel

#2 Go Boats!

Today, my friends and I rented a go boat for a few hours. Go Boat is a company that lets you rent a small solar powered electric boat for a few hours and take it out on the canals. Its super fun and easy to steer and definitely an activity that everyone should try to do while in Copenhagen! We decided to do a makeshift picnic for our 3 hour ride and brought chips, cheese, baguettes, and chocolate to snack on. Even though it was overcast today and a bit drizzly at times, I had such a good time! We brought a speaker, played music and really got to bond over our collectively bad singing (and sometimes steering)! You can bring up to 8 people on to one boat so its the perfect group outing . We also all really appreciated giving our feet a break for once – we walk so much here!

#3 Malmo

On Saturday, we hoped on a train from Copenhagen Central Station and went up to Malmo, Sweden. We figured a quick day trip would be best for our first trip out of Denmark and Malmo is only a half hour away by train. The first thing I noticed when we got there was how quiet and empty the streets were. Despite being the third biggest in Sweden, parts of Malmo felt like a ghost town. Our first stop was a bakery called Katarina’s where I got an latte and some amazing chocolate and custard pastry. We then walked over to the Malmo castle which houses at least 5 different museums – including an aquarium! It was there I learned that in the 1940’s the museum had served as a temporary home for hundreds of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. After exploring the castle, we walked around the town square and grabbed lunch at one of the many outdoor restaurants. Then we stopped by St. Peter’s Church which was strikingly beautiful. We then took a bit of a hike (okay a 30 minute walk) to Folkets park, the oldest folk park in the world. It very whimsical and reminded me a bit of Tivoli and had a splash fountain, an amphitheater and even a Ben and Jerry’s.

#4 Butterfly House and Palm House

Sunday morning, I took the Metro to Norreport and walked just right around the corner to the Botanical Gardens. For only 40 Kroner, we got a ticket to the Palm House and the Butterfly Garden. The Palm House is a huge greenhouse exhibit where you can see exotic and rare tropical plants. There were so many palms, trees, and flowers it actually felt like you were in a jungle. Also, because these were all tropical plants it definitely was a bit warmer and more humid than I expected so make sure to wear layers or you will be sweating! My favorite part of the Palm House was when we were able to climb a spiral staircase up to the top of the main green house and walk around a catwalk looking down at the green foliage. It was unlike any other view in Copenhagen. After the Palm House, we stopped by the Butterfly Garden (also indoors). I felt like a child – I got giddy when a butterfly landed on me and wouldn’t let go. There seemed to be hundreds of blue, orange, and yellow winged critters flying around in the garden. Again, it was also pretty warm in this exhibit so just be prepared. Overall, the Botanical Gardens was a perfect adventure for a rainy Sunday morning.

So that’s it for this week! I’ll just leave you with two more recommendations: #1 You have to try a Wednesday Snail from St. Peter’s Bakery near DIS they are ridiculously good and #2 Stop by Rosenborg Castle (also near DIS) for some amazing gardens and the crown jewels of Denmark!
